Blue Sculpture Finds New Home After Kennedy Center Removal

The New York Times reported yesterday that former Kennedy Center chairman David Rubenstein has bought ‘Blue’, Joel Shapiro’s site-specific sculpture for a rumoured $2million.

The sculpture, which stood on the Kennedy Center grounds since 2019, was removed by the Trump-appointed board in the latest act of executive overreach at the Center.

The sculpture will be going on display in the Sculpture Garden at the National Gallery of Art.

The artist’s daughter Ivy, who runs the Joel Shapiro & Ellen Phelan Foundation, has previously said that her father – who passed away in 2025 – would have been ‘alarmed’ at the removal of the sculpture from the Kennedy Center grounds by Trump officials.
